Italian Wine Export: USA

The United States solidifies its position as the leading international destination for Italian wine, capturing nearly 29% of Italy’s global exports. In the first half of 2024, Italian wine exports to the U.S. reached €939 million, a 4.7% increase in value and a 2.5% rise in volume compared to the same period in 2023. These findings, shared by Federvini President Micaela Pallini at the inaugural Vinitaly USA event in Chicago, reflect the growing enthusiasm for Italian wine among American consumers. Over the past two decades, sales of Italian wine in the U.S. have skyrocketed by 188%. This growth underscores the trust American consumers place in Italian wine, as evidenced by the simultaneous rise in both sales volumes and values. Hosting Vinitaly USA in Chicago proved a strategic choice, leveraging the Midwest’s emerging opportunities to further solidify Italy’s footprint in this key market.

In the first six months of 2024, still wines accounted for €668 million in exports to the U.S., while sparkling wines followed at €260 million. Prosecco continues to dominate, generating €225 million (+5.7% year-on-year). Additionally, red wines from Tuscany and Piedmont, along with Sicilian white wines, showcased robust performance, further diversifying Italy’s wine portfolio in the U.S. market. The Vinitaly USA event built upon the momentum of the New York Wine Experience hosted by Wine Spectator just days earlier. The prestigious gathering celebrated excellence with the announcement of the "Top 10 Wines of 2023," where three Italian labels—Argiano's Brunello di Montalcino 2018, Mastroberardino's Taurasi Radici Riserva 2016, and Antinori's Chianti Classico Riserva 2020—stood out.

"Every bottle of Italian wine carries the essence of our heritage, vineyards, and passion," remarked Piero Mastroberardino, Vice President of Federvini. He emphasized the importance of showcasing Italian wine’s authenticity on the global stage, reinforcing the culture of quality that defines the Italian lifestyle. Albiera Antinori, President of Federvini’s Wine Group, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the role of Italian wine as a blend of history, territory, and culture. "In today’s competitive global market, platforms like the New York Wine Experience and Vinitaly USA are essential for affirming the excellence of Made in Italy wines. The U.S. remains a market ripe with potential for Italian wines to achieve even greater milestones," she noted.

The consistent growth of Italian wine exports to the U.S. reflects not only strong consumer demand but also a clear path for continued success. Strategic events and innovative approaches will play a critical role in maintaining Italy’s leadership in the international wine market.
